Blacktown: Highest area of Sydney with Mortgage Stress
Blacktown has recently been identified as the area within Sydney as having the highest percentage of home owners in “mortgage stress” by recent figures published by ABC News. This has led to an increased number of home owners placing their homes on the market. The mortgage stress however is increasing across all of NSW, Victoria and Queensland since rate rises by the RBA.
What is Mortgage Stress?
Mortgage stress is when a household’s income is insufficient to cover its expenses, including mortgage repayments. It commonly occurs when a household spends more than 30% of its pre-tax income on mortgage repayments.
What Causes Mortgage Stress?
- Interest rate increases: Consecutive rate hikes directly increase monthly repayments.
- Cost of living increases: Higher prices for groceries, energy, fuel, and healthcare.
- Job loss or income reduction: Changes in employment status or reduced work hours.
- Additional Debt: Car loans, personal loans, credit cards, and buy-now-pay-later facilities.
